About

Kevin Orland is Bloomberg News’ Calgary bureau chief and an editor or the Americas energy and commodities team. As an editor, he has shepherded stories on topics as varied as Exxon’s struggles to retain traders to Warren Buffett’s major bet on fossil fuels. As a reporter, he’s written about the rash of fires threatening Alberta’s oil production and the province’s most recent election.

Kevin previously was Bloomberg’s Canadian finance reporter, where he wrote about Bay Street’s attempts to bring workers back to the office, the banks’ decisions to keep them home a bit longer, and how their approaches have differed from those of their Wall Street peers. He also focused on Toronto’s dealmakers, including who’s handling the most IPOs and acquisitions, who’s hiring, who’s cutting jobs, how they’re structuring their businesses, and how much they’re getting paid.

This is Kevin’s second stint in Calgary, the center of Canada’s energy industry. The first time around, he wrote about the city’s empty office towers, the debt struggles of the oil-sands’ hometown of Fort McMurray, and Alberta’s attempt to cope with an unprecedented glut of crude.

Before his Canadian adventure, he worked in Bloomberg’s Chicago bureau, where he reported and edited stories on a wide range of topics, including the federal courts, commodities producers, industrial firms, auto manufacturers, and consumer companies.

Kevin attended Marquette University and started his career as a newsperson with The Associated Press in Milwaukee.
